Fat Bear Week 2025

Fat Bear Week is an annual celebration of brown bears preparing for winter hibernation in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Each fall, the event showcases Katmai’s bears—especially those fishing along Brooks River—as they pack on pounds during a natural phenomenon called hyperphagia.

Hosted by Katmai National Park, Explore.org, and Katmai Conservancy, the bracket is revealed on September 22, and voting runs September 23–30, with the champion crowned on September 30. This single-elimination tournament invites the public to vote for the bear that best exemplifies success in getting fat to survive the winter.

What began in 2014 as a one-day event has grown into a global phenomenon, highlighting the resilience of brown bears, the importance of healthy salmon runs, and the vibrant ecosystems that sustain them.

Meet the bears and cast your vote at fatbearweek.org.
