Meet Bear #99

Year First Observed: 2023
Year Last Observed: 2025

Bear #99 is a young male brown bear first identified in 2023 at Brooks River in Katmai National Park and Preserve. He is recognized by his milk chocolate colored fur, which can appear lighter in late summer due to shedding. His build is slender compared to older males, and he is often observed fishing in the riffles and lower river areas. He has also been seen fishing at the lip of Brooks Falls. Bear #99 frequently associates with other younger bears, including his brothers 912 and 913, and has been observed near bears such as 602, 812, 907, Red, Vincent, and 902.

He is still learning to compete with larger bears for fishing spots and often takes advantage of fish left unattended by others. In 2025 he made his first appearance in the Fat Bear Week competition.
