Year Last Observed: 2025

Bear #856 is a male brown bear first identified in 2006 at Brooks River in Katmai National Park and Preserve. He is recognized for his massive size, estimated to weigh over 1,200 pounds, and his dominance along the river. He is one of the largest bears in the area, often standing tall on his hind legs to assert territory or compete for fishing spots.

In 2025, Bear #856 participated in the annual Fat Bear Week competition, reaching the final round. Despite his impressive size and strength, he was defeated by Bear #32 “Chunk,” who won the competition that year.
