Meet Bear #480 “Otis”
Year First Observed: 2001
Year Last Observed: 2023
Bear #480 “Otis” is a male brown bear first identified in 2001 at Brooks River in Katmai National Park and Preserve. He is estimated to be 4–6 years old at the time of first observation, making him one of the older bears at Brooks River. Otis is known for his distinctive fishing technique, often sitting patiently in the river, waiting for salmon to swim within reach. This method has earned him the nickname “Zen Master” among park staff and bear cam viewers.
Over the years, Otis has become a fan favorite, known for his calm demeanor and impressive size. He has won the Fat Bear Week competition four times, in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2021. Despite his age and missing teeth, Otis continued to fish successfully at Brooks Falls, often seen in his favorite spot, known as “Otis’s Office,” a pool on the river left side of the falls.
